An Angel in the House

An Angel in the House

Psalm 34:7 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. (NIV)

Picture a familiar room in your home. A couch, a lamp, some trinkets. You can almost hear the quietness, and the room is filled with a warm light. Picture yourself there, in a moment of ordinary solitude. It's easy to imagine something so common.

Now, picture a circle of angels around you, standing guard. You're enjoying a quiet night in your living room, and the angels are protecting you with solemn and alert faces. Is that as easy to imagine? It should be. Those stoic figures should be just as familiar as the cozy living room scene.

Psalm 91:11 tells us “He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all of your ways.” Can you imagine your guards around you now? They’re there. They aren’t watching over you from above. They are with you, and actively protecting you with the power of the Most High behind them. Jesus has commanded his armies of angels to keep you safe.

But what about when you don’t feel safe? What about when your child is faced with difficulties that you can only support them through? How can you believe that your child has this protection, when they have been given such an immense burden?

That’s where Psalm 34:7 comes in. “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.” Whatever hardship your family has been put through was allowed by the grace of God for his purposes. But, you’re not alone to handle it. The “angel of the Lord” isn’t just any angel. The angel of the Lord is Jesus, and he is encamped around you and your family. He is there with you! He isn’t a high king who stays in his tower while his troops ready for battle on the grounds below. Your King stays there to support you, give you strength, and fill your home with His love.

Jesus' love is what protects and shields us, until we can all be with him in heaven again someday. That love is with you and your child today.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for placing your protection around my child and my family. Help me keep this reminder at heart: that I have an army of angels protecting me and the love of a Savior to carry me through my days. Amen.
