Top of the List

Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (NIV)

I come from a family of list-makers and married into one as well. I find myself making lists at work and even on the weekends! Some lists are fun, like a Christmas or birthday list that you give to your parents, or a list of the fun things you are doing on your next vacation. (Personally, I enjoy the Marvel list of chronological movies!) I also make “to do” lists. Some days I am able to check things off of my list, and other days not so much.

Are you a list person as well? If you are, welcome to the club! Does your “to do” list include school, therapy and medical appointments, work, housework, after school activities, social events, and paying bills? A list like that can be overwhelming. If you are the parent of a child or children with special needs, this list may also include basic tasks of dressing, feeding, and just getting ready for the day. Not everyone understands this, but God does.

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus talks to us about how God provides us with “all these things,” especially when we put God and his kingdom at the top of the list. I have to admit, I don’t always put God at the top of the list—I get lost in completing the earthly items instead. Let’s take a hint from the story of Mary and Martha.

Luke 10:41,42 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (NIV)

When we put God (and his kingdom and righteousness) first on our lists, all of the other things will fall into place. It’s also important to realize that the Lord is pleased with everything that we do out of love for him, including the everyday things that you do for your child/children with special needs. Even though the world likes to recognize the big victories, God celebrates all of them, no matter the size. Not only does he celebrate with you—he also provides you with the resources, abilities, energy, and time you need to complete your tasks. Why wouldn’t we put him at the top of our list?

Time with God might be spent reading these devotions, listening to a devotion from Timeofgrace.org, or just being in prayer. Remember to put him at the top of your list for your own spiritual health and that of your children. The Lord will bless this.

Dear Lord, please help me make time with you a priority every day. With so many people and things wanting my attention, it can be hard. Forgive me for the times I haven’t given you top priority. With your grace and forgiveness, lead me to see your blessings as I finish the items on my list, doing them all to your glory. Most importantly, bless my time in your Word. Amen.
